Emojis can be a fun and expressive way to add an emotional touch to messages and social media posts, but typing them on a computer with a traditional keyboard may prove challenging.
You can use Character Map (Windows) or the Character Viewer app (Apple Mac computers) to scroll through emoji and other special symbols. Alternatively, keyboard shortcuts allow you to type these characters directly in documents.
1. Type the Characters
Smileys are iconic symbols of joy used in messaging apps, video games, and social media platforms. Their use has spread throughout the world to become part of everyday culture.
Typing a smiley face can be done several ways, but the most popular method involves using Alt Code shortcuts on your computer keyboard. These enable you to insert any symbol without having to search for it first.

In addition to keyboard shortcuts, character maps on your computer can also be utilized. They come standard with all Microsoft operating systems and allow you to insert accented letters and symbols into documents.
Typing a smiley is as easy as typing “:” for the eyes and closing parenthesis for the mouth. Other characters may feature more intricate features like googly eyes or noses.
2. Add the Eyes
Cartoonists everywhere rue the days of small eyes, but in the right hands they can be an art form. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to achieve a similar look without resorting to squinting. All that’s required is some research, creativity with pencil and paper, some luck (in the form of lucky dips or two) and plenty of paper of suitable thickness.
3. Add the Mouth
A smiley face is an emoji symbolizing happiness or contentment. This popular icon can be used to convey a variety of feelings, from joy and excitement to serious concern or apology.
Create a smiley face in Photoshop using the Face Tool and Liquify filter. You can reshape the model’s mouth to make it more expressive by altering upper lip, lower lip or Mouth Width properties as desired.
You can use the Forward Warp Tool to reshape specific sections of a face in any direction. Simply click on the tool icon, then use your mouse to push on areas you wish to change shape – creating a wide-eyed smiley face! Adding smiley faces is an effortless way to add personality and realism to any image.
4. Add the Nose
Your smiley may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it can be an expressive part of yourself. To maximize its potential, think like a kid and create an original and quirky personality for it – this will give you the edge over others and make you the talk of the town! You’re also more likely to score dates! Most importantly though – have fun! After all, no one is going to be won over by just looking good on camera if you don’t enjoy yourself first!
