2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home has officially passed 2009’s Avatar at the domestic box office.
According to ComicBook.com, No Way Home has earned $760.9 million domestically. This puts the Marvel Cinematic Universe film just past Avatar, which earned $760.5 million across its various releases. No Way Home is now the third-highest grossing film domestically, behind 2019’s Avengers: Endgame at $858 million- and 2015’s-Star Wars: The Force Awakens at $936 million. These numbers do not account for inflation.

While No Way Home has surpassed Avatar domestically, the film still lags behind the James Cameron sci-fi movie in terms of total earnings. At the worldwide box office, Avatar has earned more than $2.8 billion, while No Way Home has not yet surpassed $2 billion. That being said, No Way Home is not particularly far behind 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, which took in $2.048 billion worldwide.
Set after the events of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far from Home, No Way Home sees Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) enlisting the help of Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to re-hide his identity after it was exposed by Quentin Beck/Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in that film. However, the spell goes awry, and they end up splitting open the multiverse, causing those who know that Peter is Spider-Man to enter the MCU. This forces Peter to contend with such villains as Doctor Otto Octavius/Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) and Norman Osborn/Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), though he later gets help from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Spider-Man.
In addition to faring well at the box office despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, No Way Home received positive reviews from critics and audiences. At the time of writing, No Way Home holds 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, one of the highest scores for an MCU project. This led to Sony and Marvel campaigning for No Way Home to receive a nod for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, though they were not successful.

Avatar explores the planet of Pandora as humans attempt to colonize the planet to get unobtanium, a rare and valuable mineral. Over the course of the movie, protagonist Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) decides to instead work with the planet’s native Na’vi and stop those efforts at colonization.
Critically and commercially, Avatar proved a major success. The movie currently holds an 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and has held the top spot in terms of worldwide gross for the majority of time since its release. While Endgame did surpass Avatar following its release, the Cameron film retook the title last year.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters now. Avatar is available to own on home media.
